Look at 1/4 of the figure.
I have numbered each squares.

13 14 15 16
We will be looking at square 1,2,5,6.
Area of these 4 squares= 8 x 8= 64
Area of the unshaded part below the semi circle= 64 - 0.25(pi)(64)=13.735
Area of the unshaded part inside the semi circle= (4x4 ) x 2= 32
Area of shaded part = 64- 13.735- 32 = 18.27
