Use quadratic formula. Since there didn't specify where alpha is large, randomly assign both roots to alpha and beta.

mistake in calculation of roots …
… where it is written sqrt(72), should be sqrt(8) instead.
… so, roots should be
1+[(sqrt(2))/2] and 1-[(sqrt(2))/2].

I believe that the "proper" way to solve these alpha beta type of questions is to do it without having to find the actual roots.
