Notice that the pattern repeats itself every 4 numbers.

9 divided by 4 leaves a remainder of 1. This remainder 1 corresponds to the first of the four-digit formation 3462, which is digit 3.

10 divided by 4 leaves a remainder of 2. This remainder 2 corresponds to the second of the four-digit formation 3462, which is digit 4.

11 divided by 4 leaves a remainder of 3. This remainder 3 corresponds to the third of the four-digit formation 3462, which is digit 6.

12 divided by 4 leaves no remainder. This can be thought of as a remainder of “4”. This remainder “4” corresponds to the fourth digit of the four-digit formation 3462, which is 2.

And so on.

So let’s say we wish to find the 100th number. 100 divided by 4 leaves no remainder, but for the purposes of this question we say a remainder “4”. This corresponds to the fourth digit, which is 2.

Therefore, we have the following.

427 divided by 4 is 106 with a remainder of 3.

This remainder of 3 corresponds to digit 6, so the 427th digit is 6.
