Answer should be 38 white beads instead of 40.
Note that the 1st and last bead are black. There are 19 repeating groups of black+white+white, followed by 1 single black at the end.
19 x 2 = 38 white beads.

as 1 black is outside the cloth, need to plus 2 before the next black inside the cloth. as 1 white is outside the colth, need to minus 1 to get the answer.
