Cut the cake in this manner.
From the top, slice downwards like this: | (downward direction)

From the middle side of the cake (half the height of the cake), cut horizontally.

Actually cutting in this manner will not get you 8 equal pieces also because the toppings on top of the cake will not be the same as the rest of the cake.
