Average is a measure of how much someone will receive if the entire collection of objects is compiled and then redistributed equally.
For example, in this case, there are $10, $12, $8 and $18. Collecting all these gets us $48 from the four people. If this money is shared equally among the four people, each person receives $12. This is what we call average.
