Need correct working
There are a total of 24 people.
Each child ticket costs $2.
Each adult ticket costs $6.
The total cost of the tickets is $116.
Let’s assume that all 24 people are adults (you can also first assume that all 24 are children, or even assume that 12 are children and 12 are adults, the workings are similar).
Then the total cost of the tickets is 24 x 6 = $144.
Is this the same as $116? Nope.
Let’s replace 1 adult by 1 child. Now we have 23 adults and 1 child.
Then the total cost of the tickets is 23 x 6 + 1 x 2 = $140.
Is this the same as $116? Nope.
Let’s replace another adult by 1 child. Now we have 22 adults and 2 children.
Then the total cost of the tickets is 22 x 6 + 2 x 2 = $136.
Is this the same as $116? Nope.
Let’s replace yet another adult by 1 child. Now we have 21 adults and 3 children.
Then the total cost of the tickets is 21 x 6 + 3 x 2 = $132.
Is this the same as $116? Nope.
You will repeat this process until you get to the answer. I will cut this short.
...now we have 16 adults and 8 children.
Then the total cost of the tickets is 17 x 6 + 7 x 2 = $116.
Is this the same as $116? Yes.
There must have been 17 adults and 7 children, so there are 10 more adults than children.
This assumes that each person buys only 1 ticket.
