r: 2u
p: 32-2u

exchange
r: 2u => p: 3u

32 - 2u + 3u = 41

For every 2 rulers he gave Sally, he received 3 pencils.

3 - 2 = 1

This means that the total number of items he has increases by 1 for every 2 rulers he trade.

Overall increase in number of items
= 41 - 32
= 9

So his overall number of items increased by 9. That's 9 times of 1, which means there were 9 times of 2 rulers traded.

So number of rulers traded
= 2 x 9
= 18

Number of pencils at first
= 32 - 18
= 14
