Alan : Geetha = 4 : 1
Total age now = 46
8 years ago = 46-8-8 = 30
4u + 1u = 30
5u=30
1u = 6
Therefore, 8 years ago, Geetha is 6 years old.

Since both of them have grown eight years older, their total age increases by 16 years. So in order to get the total age where Alan is 4 times as old as Geetha, need to take away 16 from their total age now.
