x(2 - x) = 3

since α is a root of the equation,

α(2 - α) = 3

Multiply both sides by (2 + α),

α(2 - α)(2 + α) = 3(2 + α)

α(2² - α²) = 6 + 3α
(using property a² - b² = (a + b)(a - b))

4α - α³ = 6 + 3α

α³ = a - 6

You can also multiply the expression by other linear terms such a - 2, but then the term in a2 survives and you will need to use the original equation to obtain a2 in terms of other terms so that the a2 gets substituted away.
