We can divide the circle into two equal parts by drawing a line from 16 to 7. This is the diameter of the circle and the two numbers are in the middle of the the circle.

Between 16 and 7 are the numbers

15,14,13,12,11,10,9,8
That's a total of 8 numbers.

Since each half of the circle is symmetrical, and the children are spaced evenly apart,

if there are eight numbers between 16 and 7 on one side, then on the other side of the circle there must be 8 numbers between 16 and 7.

Counting backwards, we know that 6,5,4,3,2,1 are part of the 8.

There has to be 2 more numbers, and they can only be the numbers in front of 16.
They are 17 and 18.

So there were 18 children.

Between 7 and 16 are 8 students in a half of a circle. Hence, an entire circle should have 8 X 2 (2 halves) + 2 (no.7 & 16) = 18 students in total
