No, the answer is (4).

She used 2/5 of her ribbon.
1 - 2/5 = 3/5
So the fraction that is left is 3/5 of the whole ribbon.

If 3/5 of the whole ribbon = 3/10 m,
then 1/5 of the whole ribbon
= 3/10 m ÷ 3
= 3/10 m x ⅓
= 1/10 m

The length of the whole ribbon
= 1/10 m x 5
= 5/10 m
= ½ m

Bryce, you have misinterpreted '2/5 of her ribbon' as '2/5 m of her ribbon'

2/5 m = 20/50 m = 40/100 m = 0.4 m = 40 cm
It's an absolute value.

In contrast, 2/5 is a fraction. It is relative to the orignal amount you choose.

For example, 2/5 of 100 m
= 100 m x 2/5
= 20 m x 2/1
= 40 m

2/5 of 30 m
= 30 m x 2/5
= 6 m x 2/1
= 12 m
