Draw a circle with the chord AB and CD. Extending CD further to the centre (lets call it O) of the circle gives the radius. OA and OB are also the radii of the circle.

Pythagoras theorem would show that
OA^2= OC^2+AC^2

However, OC+4=OD, a radius. Hence OD = OA

OC+4=OA
OC=OA-4

OA^2=(OA-4)^2+AC^2

You know AC, and you can hence expand and simplify the equation above. You get a quadratic equation, and solving it gets 2 answers. You accept the applicable answer of OA. Diameter is just twice this answer.
