When Mrs Tan is 4 times as old as James, Mrs Tan’s age is 4 units and James’ age is 1 unit. Let 1 unit be € in the model diagram.

Then the difference in ages is 3 units (€), which corresponds to 24 years.

3 units = 24 years
1 unit = 8 years

So James would be 8 years old.

This time frame, in fact, has passed already since James is 10 years old now.
