4 pens = $y
12 pens = 3 sets of $y

So 3 pens cost $3y.

1 pen = $(y/4) if all pens cost the same

Since 1 ruler costs $2 less than a pen,

Cost of 1 ruler
= $[(y/4) - 2]

You can pretend y = 4 and then see what you would do with regular numbers. With letters like y it’s quite similar except that your answer will contain y.
