There's a problem with the question.

Minimum height is 2 cubes high due to that lone cube on the top. For the base, the minimum length is 4 cubes long and same for the breadth as seen from the diagram.

However,

42cm³ can be broken down into its prime factors

42 = 2 x 3 x 7
This is the only possible combination of the 3 dimensions


So there's no way to form a cuboid of 2cm by 3 cm by 7cm if the base is already a minimum of 4 cubes by 4 cubes.

This is based on the presumption that the solid's cubes are undetachable to be rearranged, which is usually the case.

There are 10 cubes so take 42 - 10 = 32

But if you used a calculator It would be a different answer.
