tan of an angle touching the x-axis is directly related to the gradient of the line, simply because tan is opposite divided by adjacent, but then opposite is the change in y and adjacent is the change in x.
So the above is equivalent to change in y divided by change in x, or gradient.
If tan x = k, then the gradient is k or -k depending on whether the line is upsloping or downsloping.
