Alternative way is to use the quadratic formula.
x = (-(-4) ± √((-4)² - 4(1)(2)) ) / 2(1)
x = ½ ± ½√8
one root is ½ + ½√8, the other ½ - ½√8
Since α < β, then the difference is negative
= ½ - ½√8 - (½ + ½√8)
= - √8
(This also tells you that α = ½ - ½√8, β = ½ + ½√8)
