There are 3 equal pieces cut out from Rope Q and Rope R.

Rope Q is 1.5 m in length.

Each mini-piece cut from Rope R is 0.4 m more than each mini-piece cut from Rope Q. There are three sets of mini-pieces, so Rope R must have been 0.4 x 3 = 1.2 m longer than Rope Q.

Length of Rope R
= 1.5 + 1.2
= 2.7 m
= 27/10 m
= 2 7/10 m (mixed fraction)

A second idea is this.

Since Rope Q is 1.5 m long, each piece cut out from Rope Q is 1.5 / 3 = 0.5 m long, where / is my division symbol.

Since each piece cut out from Rope R is 0.4 m longer than each piece cut out from Rope Q,

Length of each piece cut out from Rope R
= 0.5 + 0.4
= 0.9 m

Length of Rope R
= 0.9 x 3
= 2.7 m

as before.
