Answer a) 18 b) 168 pls answer as soon as possible
Let Beth's candies at first be 4 units.
Then Aisha's at first would be 4 units + 60
①
Aisha gave ¼ of her candies to Beth
¼ x (4 units + 60) = 1 unit + 15
So Aisha has 3 units + 45 left now.
Beth now has 4 units + 1 unit + 15
= 5 units + 15
②
Then, Beth gave 2/5 of hers to Aisha.
2/5 x (5 units + 15) = 2 units + 6
Now Aisha has 3 units + 45 + 2 units + 6
= 5 units + 51
③
Then her mother gave her 87 more candies.
5 units + 51 + 87 = 5 units + 138
This is what Aisha has in the end.
At the end she has twice of her original.
So (5 units + 138) is twice of (4 units + 60)
2 x (4 units + 60) = 8 units + 120
This means that :
5 units + 138 = 8 units + 120
One side has 3 more units. The other side has 18 more candies.
Since the two sides are equal , then there is no difference in their value. This means 3 units must equal 18.
(You can draw a model to visualise this)
1 unit = 18 ÷ 3 = 6
a)
Beth gave 2 units + 6 to Aisha.
So that's
2 x 6 + 6 = 12 + 6 = 18
b)
Aisha has 5 units + 138 in the end
= 5 x 6 + 138
= 30 + 138
= 168
Or
Aisha has 8 units + 120 in the end
= 8 x 6 + 120
= 48 + 120
= 168
