There's a pattern if you notice.


Black squares :


Pattern 1 : 1
Pattern 2 : 1 + 2
Pattern 3 : 1 + 2 + 3
Pattern 4 : 1 + 2 + 3 + 4


So for pattern 251, it's :

1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + ... + 249 + 250 + 251

Now we can pair the numbers.


1 + 250 = 251
2 + 249 = 251
3 + 248 = 251
4 + 247 = 251
.
.
.
122 + 129 = 251
123 + 128 = 251
124 + 127 = 251
125 + 126 = 251


As you can see we have formed 125 pairs, each pair's total is 251.

so 251 x 125 = 31375

Now the last number , 251, was unpaired. We simply add it to 31375 to get our total.

31375 + 251 = 31626
