48+69+62 - 9 - ? = 158
Hi Lynn, the question can be done with the following steps :
Middle portion of Rod Y
= 158cm - Rod X - Rod Z
= 158cm - 48cm - 62cm
= 48cm
Now we know that the length of Rod Y is equal to the middle portion + the right overlap + the left overlap.
So left overlap
= Length of Rod Y - middle portion - right overlap
= 69cm - 48cm - 9cm
= 12cm
Middle portion of Rod Y
= 158cm - Rod X - Rod Z
= 158cm - 48cm - 62cm
= 48cm
Now we know that the length of Rod Y is equal to the middle portion + the right overlap + the left overlap.
So left overlap
= Length of Rod Y - middle portion - right overlap
= 69cm - 48cm - 9cm
= 12cm
=69-9-(158-68-42)=12CM
