Median is 2.
This must refer to the 8th person since the first five read zero magazines each and the next two read one magazine each.
So, there are 7 people before the 8th person. There must also have been 7 people after so that the 8th person lies nicely in the middle.
x = 7.
If median is 1, this can refer to f the 6th person, 7th person or the “6.5th” person (where the middle two are the 6th and 7th people).
In the case of 6th person, there are 5 people before and 5 people after. This “5 people after” includes the other person who reads 1 magazine and one person who reads 2 magazines.
So, x = 5 - 1 - 1 = 3.
In the case of 7th person, there are 6 people before and 6 people after. This “6 people after” includes the one person who reads 2 magazines.
So, x = 6 - 1 = 5.
In the case of “6.5th” person, where we consider both the 6th and 7th people to be the middle two, there are 5 people before the 6th person and 5 people after the 7th person. This “5 people after” includes the one person who reads 2 magazines.
So, x = 5 - 1 = 4.
Therefore, x can take 3, 4 or 5.
