Tuesday's amount = Monday's amount + $0.40
Wednesday's amount = Monday's amount + $0.40 + $0.40
Thursday's amount = Monday's amount + $0.40 + $0.40 + $0.40
Friday's amount = Monday's amount + $0.40 + $0.40 + $0.40 + $0.40

Total amount saved = 5 x Monday's amount + 10 x $0.40
= 5 x Monday's amount + $4

5 x Monday's amount + $4 = $12
So 5 x Monday's amount = $12 - $4 = $8
Monday's amount = $8 ÷ 5 = $1.60

So amount saved on Friday
= $1.60 + 4 x $0.40
= $1.60 + $1.60
= $3.20
