Since the two shaded areas are equal,

70% ÷ 2 = 35%

The shaded area on the left is 35% of the area of Y.

35% in fractions would be 35/100 = 7/20

(Easiest is to see it as 3.5/10 but it's not correct to represent it like this)

The left shaded area is 4/5 of X's area. Since the shaded areas are the same for both, we make the numerator the same as the number of units should be the same.

Common factor of 4 and 7 is 28

4/5 = 28/35
(multiply both numerator and denominator by 7)

7/20 = 28/80
(multiply both numerator and denominator by 4)

So we can say left shaded area is 28 units.
Area of X is 35 units and area of Y is 80 units.

Left shaded area = right shaded area
= 28 units

Right shaded area is a quarter circle.
(Notice the 90° angle)

Area of quarter circle
= ¼ x 22/7 x 7cm 7cm
= 38.5 cm²

38.5cm² = 28 units

1 unit = 38cm² ÷ 28 = 1.375cm²

Unshaded area of X = 35 units - 28 units
= 7 units

Area of Y = 80 units

Area of the unshaded 3 quarters of the circle

= 3 x 38.5cm²
= 115.5 cm²

Total area of figure = unshaded area of X + area of Y + area of 3 unshaded quarter circles

= 80 units + 7 units + 115.5cm²
= 87 units + 115.5cm²
= 87 x 1.375cm² + 115.5cm²

= 119.625cm² + 115.5cm²

= 235.125cm²

= 235⅛ cm²
