For part b, let y = x - 1.
What do I do after that
2y2 + y - 15 = 0
(2y - 5) (y + 3) = 0
y = 5/2 or y = -3
2 (x - 1)^2 + x - 16 = 0
2 (x - 1)^2 + x - 1 - 15 = 0
2 (x - 1)^2 + (x - 1) - 15 = 0
Letting y = x - 1,
2y2 + y - 15 = 0
From the earlier results,
y = 5/2 or y = -3
Replacing y by the original x - 1,
x - 1 = 5/2 or x - 1 = -3
x = 7/2 or x = -2
(2y - 5) (y + 3) = 0
y = 5/2 or y = -3
2 (x - 1)^2 + x - 16 = 0
2 (x - 1)^2 + x - 1 - 15 = 0
2 (x - 1)^2 + (x - 1) - 15 = 0

Good evening Irah! We are not allowed to expand the expression in the second equation since we are required to use the first part results.
Sadly for part a, 5 x 6 is not 15.
