cost
3 b: $24
8 b: $64

8 d + 3 b = 8 d + 24

3 d + 8 b = 3 d + 64

8 d + 24 = 3 d + 64 + 20
d = 60/5 = $12

1 dress costs $12

Non algebra method :

Compare the two cases :

①8 dresses and 3 blouses
②3 dresses and 8 blouses.

Notice that there are 3 blouses and 3 dresses in common.

What is different is just 5 blouses and 5 dresses.

So 5 dresses cost $20 more than 5 blouses.

$20 ÷ 5 = $4

1 dress cost $4 than 1 blouse.

Cost of a dress = $8 + $4 = $12
