Let the number of pupils in the school be 7 units.

2 units are boys and 5 units are girls.

There are 3 units of girls more than boys. This corresponds to 300 more girls than boys.

3 units = 300
1 unit = 300/3 = 100 (/ is my division symbol)
7 units = 100 x 7 = 700

so there are 700 pupils in the school.
