Area of the largest rectangle (which is the 12 cm by 12 cm square, in fact)
= 12 x 12
= 144 cm^2

Area of left side unshaded region (that triangle with 4 cm and 12 cm)
=1/2 x 4 x 12
= 24 cm^2

Area of top right unshaded region (that triangle with 4 cm and 8 cm)
= 1/2 x 4 x 8
= 16 cm^2

Area of bottom unshaded region (that triangle with 8 cm and 12 cm)
= 1/2 x 8 x 12
= 48 cm^2

Area of shaded triangle
= 144 - 24 - 16 - 48
= 56 cm^2
