4/9 means 4 parts out of 9 parts.
So 4 parts = 56
1 part = 56 ÷ 4 = 14
9 parts = 14 x 9 = 126
The number is 126
Or
4/9 of a number is 56. So the number is 9/4 of 56.
56 x 9/4
= 14/1 x 9
= 126
(By the way, x 9/4 is the same as x 9 ÷ 4 or ÷ 4 x 9)
So 4 parts = 56
