Bag cost $59. Since the Average became $23,

$59 - $23 = $36

We can treat it as the bag's cost went down by $36 while the total cost of the books went up by $36

$23 - $20 = $3

Each book went up by $3.

Number of books
= $36 ÷ 3
= 12

Thanks. Misread the question as him buying one more book instead of a bag.
