(a)
before discount
1st bk = $10 ; 2nd bk = $8

after discount
price of 1st bk = 0.9x10 = $9

price of 2nd bk = 0.8x8 = $6.40

Kim paid 9+6.40 = $15.40

(b)
before discount
1st bk = u + 4 ;
2nd bk = u

after discount
price of 1st bk = 0.9x(u+4)
= 0.9u + 3.6

price of 2nd bk = 0.8xu = 0.8u

Hao paid $24.80

0.9u + 3.6 + 0.8u = 24.80
u = $12.47

price of 2nd bk before discount
is $12.47.

Ideally, Kim 1st book $10 and 2nd book = $8 in order to enjoy the discount.
1st book = 10% discount
100%= $10
10% = $1
90%=$9

2nd book = 20%
100%=$8
10%=$0.80
80%=$6.40

Kim pay $9+$6.40= $15.40
