Each cube has 6 faces.
6 faces per cube x 6 cubes = 36 faces

Area of each face = area of square
= 3cm x 3cm
= 9cm²

However,

There are 5 intersections where the faces are not visible. In each of these intersections, 2 faces are blocked.

Total number of faces blocked = 5 x 2
= 10

Total number of exposed faces
= 36 - 10 = 26

Surface area
= 26 faces x 9cm²
= 234cm²

Alternative method :

Front view : 5 faces exposed.
Back view : 5 faces exposed.

Right view : 4 faces exposed
Left view : 4 faces exposed.

Top view : 4 faces exposed
Bottom view : 4 faces exposed

Total number of exposed faces
= 5+5+4+4+4+4
= 26

Surface area
= 9cm² x 26
= 234cm²
