Very confusing..... what should we do first? How do you expand 4(x-4) squared? Is it possible to simplify (x-2)(x+5)? Is there a way to join the fractions together?

Just treat it like your normal fractions.

Realise that

(x - 4)² = (x - 4)(x - 4)
(x + 5)² = (x + 5)(x + 5)

So you can cancel out the common terms (x - 4) and (x + 5) in the numerator and denominator for both fractions.

Its the same way as typical multiplication of fractions,

eg. 2/5 x 5/3 = 2/3 , where the 5s cancel each other out.

This works because both fractions are connected by a multiplication sign, in which we can directly multiply the numerators together and multiply the denominators together, just like we normally did with numbers (3/7 x 4/9 = 12/63 for example).

Had the two fractions been connected by an addition sign, nothing much could be done.
