At first,

ratio of Ali : Ben : Total = 3 : 1 : 4

In the end,

ratio of Ali : Ben : Total = 4 : 1 : 5

Notice that the amount of $ they have altogether doesn't change since Ben is just giving to Ali and not someone else.

So the number of units in total should be the same. So make them the same.

Multiply the first ratio by 5,
ratio of Ali : Ben : Total = 15 : 5 : 20

Multiply the first ratio by 4,
ratio of Ali : Ben : Total = 16 : 4 : 20

So you can see that there are 20 units of $ in total and Ben gave Ali 1 unit.

So 1 unit = $5.40

Ben had 5 units at first

So Ben's $ at first = $5.40 x 5 = $27
