0.4 = 4 ÷ 10 = 4/10

And 4/10 = 40/100 = 40%

So it's saying adults make up 40% or 4/10(which actually simplifies to 2/5) of the total number people there.

So this means your boys + girls make up the other 60% or 6/10 ( simplifies to 3/5)

If boys + girls = 12 units,

Then 12 units is 3/5 of total.

So 1/5 of total is 12 units ÷ 3 = 4 units

Adults are 2/5 of total, so adults = 4 units x 2 = 8 units

(Or in one step, adults = 12 units x 2/3 = 8 units)

Since you now know that adults = 8 units, you can just do the same for adults as you did in your working for boys and girls.

Add up the units . They equal 1475. So you can easily find 1 unit from here and therefore solve a) from there. Intuitively, children refers to both boys and girls.

For b) it's even simpler. You should try to figure out the working first on your own since it's part of learning. If you still can't figure it out after a while then Pancakes has the working posted and you can refer to it. Basically the same as your working but continued

2/5 means A=2u and Total=5u. However total is made up of B, G and A. Rewrite as A=2u, B+G+A=5u. Observe B+G=3u.

In the first ratio given, B=5u and G=7u. Thus, B+G=12u.

Make B+G the same number of units for both ratios. Then find the total number of sweets given out to each group of people. Add up all the sweets in 3 groups. This is equal to 1475. From here you can find 1 unit and solve the question.
