Can I use unit and part method for this question? Pls advise. Tks
You can let men and women be 100 units and 100 parts each.
on Tuesday,
Men = 100 units - 20 units = 80 units
Women = 100 parts + 37.5 parts = 137.5 parts
So 100 units + 100 parts = 80 units + 137.5 parts
Both sides of the equation subtract 80 units 100 parts,
20 units = 37.5 parts
Multiply by 5,
100 units = 187.5 parts
So for Monday, using this result,
187.5 parts + 100 parts = 2001 people
287.5 parts = 2001 people
1 part = 2001 people ÷ 287.5 = 6.96 people
(although this is in decimal, the result later will be a whole number)
Women on Tuesday = 137.5 parts
= 6.96 x 137.5
= 957
20% = 20/100 = 1/5
37.5% = 75% ÷ 2 = 75/100 ÷ 2 = 3/4 ÷ 2
= 3/8
OR
37.5% = 375/1000 = 75/200 = 15/40 = 3/8
So you can let men be 5units and women be 8 parts on Monday, and solve accordingly.

So it follows that the number of people who attended the conference on Tuesday is also 2001.
The question is basically saying on Tuesday, the number of men attending decreased and the number of women decreased, but the total number stays the same at 2001 people.
So 5u + 8p = 4u + 11p. If you're unconvinced, find the value of 1unit from his working. Add up the total on both sides of the equation and you'll see that you get 2001 for both sides
