Well this is highly subjective.

My Teachers once told me to reject the answers at that part due to the context of the question.

On the other hand, I saw an examination marking script in which 1 mark is deducted for rejecting an answer at that part.

Personally I understand that the context of the question may make one value of y redundant, but personally I would not reject my answer at that part (it is an equation after all; even though there is a storyline earlier, this equation is just an equation to solve, hence, I see no reason why it should be rejected at that part, but I will reject one value immediately after the next part to explain why).
