What kind of information needed?

An extra data is needed, such as the mass of a cake. Without that data, the question cannot be solved with certainty.

Suppose Ali bakes 8 fewer muffins than said, such that the number of muffins baked is the same as the number of cakes.

Because a muffin is 0.5 kg and currently the cakes are 3.48 kg more than the muffins, baking 8 fewer muffins would mean the cakes are now 3.48 + 8 x 0.5 = 3.48 + 4 = 7.48 kg more than the muffins.

From there, however, we cannot proceed, because we do not have the mass of the cakes or the difference in masses between a cake and a muffin.

With an extra data, for example, that a cake is 748 grams more than a muffin, we can then figure out that 7.48 kg / 748 g = 7480 g / 748 g = 10, meaning that there must be 10 cakes and 10 muffins if there are 8 muffins less. This means that there must be 18 muffins at the start.
