Since S and J have the same amount of money if S lends $5 to J, it follows that S must have $10 more than J at first.

If S lends $17 to J, S will have $17 less than before while J will have $17 more than before. The total money change is $34. As a result, now S has $24 less than J. This corresponds to a ratio 4:7.

3 units —> $24
1 unit —> 24 / 3 = 8
4 units —> 8 x 4 = $32

So S has $32 after the $17 transfer.

S has $49 now (and J has $39 now).
