You're on the right track. Just manipulate the variables "x" and "y".

Clue 1: make one of the variable as the subject.

X+y= 138
X= 138-y _(1)
3x+2y= 331_(2)
Sub (1) into (2):
3(138-y)+2y=331
414-3y+2y=331
y= 83

Since y=83,
X=138-83
X=55
