4 X - 40 = 6 Y

Alright so on the before diagram, the total number of people in the carnival is 4X right? However, 40 non swimmers left. Therefore, in the ‘After’ diagram, you can see that the non-swimmer model has Y but 40 of them have left. That means that the total number of people in the carnival has also decreased by 40.

So,

4X (which is the total number of people before the carnival) - 40 ( which are the people who left) = 6Y (which is the total number of people remaining in the carnival)
