If you draw more identical triangles (with the shaded areas inside) and join them together, you will realise that :

6 shaded areas will join up to form 1 full circle. So each shaded area is 1/6 the area of a circle.

So the shaded areas = ½ a circle's area.

½ x πr² is the answer. The value of the radius can be calculated from the 12 cm you see in the diagram.
