Assume the fruits consist of only oranges and grapes.

“There were 20% more oranges than grapes”

Assume that there are 100 units of grapes. Then there would be 120 units of oranges.

A 10% increase in oranges means an increase in 12 units of oranges, so that there are now 132 units of oranges.

A 9% increase in grapes means an increase in 9 units of grapes, so that there are now 109 units of grapes.

Remember that in this case, 1 unit of oranges have the same value as 1 unit of grapes.

There is a total of 21 units increase in fruits altogether, which corresponds to 126 fruits added.

There were initially 220 units of fruits.

21 units —> 126
1 unit —> 6
220 units —> 1320

So there were 1320 fruits at first.
