Second one is (y - x)^2 = (-5 - 4)^2 = 81, since x < 5.

Alex, to do the first type y/x, this is what I do. As far as possible, I find values of x and y which are of opposite signs so that their result is negative, since all negative numbers are smaller than all positive numbers. Then I find numbers such that the magnitude of y/x is the greatest, because placing a negative sign in front of this magnitude makes that greatest number the smallest.
