Hii! Persistent and violent coughing due to excess mucus blocking air passages is the reason why a person gets emphysema.
Thus, during emphysema, the partition walls of the alveoli breaks down ( because of persistent and violent coughing ), whixh decreases the surface area for gaseous exchange. Our lungs will lose elasticity and become inflated as well. ( so in the end of the day, the lungs incapability to expand and contract to decrease or increase air pressure of lung thorax and the reduced surface area is the cause for more difficult breathing)
