100% = 400
40% = 160

$1.50 x 160 = $240

100% = $1.50
[20% discount] 80% = $1.20

remainder = 400 - 160 = 240
30% of remainder = 0.3 x 240 = 72

$1.20 x 72 = $86.40

Sale with profits = 240+86.40
= $326.40

pencils w. profits = 72+160 = 232
cost price of 232 m. pencils
= 326.40 - 71.20
= $255. 20

cost price of 1 m. pencil
= 255.20 / 232
= $1.10

cost price of 400 m. pencils
= $1.10 x 400
= $440
