a)

One packet of 2 notebooks cost $3.

6 notebooks is 3 times of that.
(because 6 ÷ 2 = 3 or 2 x 3 = 6)

So 3 packets of notebooks make up 6 notebooks.
Cost of 3 packets = $3 x 3 = $9

One packet of 3 pens cost $4.

6 pens is 2 times of that.
(Because 6 ÷ 3 = 2 or 3 x 2 = 6)

So 2 packets of pens make up 6 pens.
Cost of 2 packets = $4 x 2 = $8

$9 - $8 = $1

6 notebooks cost $1 more than 6 pens

b)

If 6 notebooks cost $1 more than 6 pens, then 3 sets of 6 notebooks cost $3 more than 3 sets of 6 pens.

(Because $3 ÷ $1 = 3 or $1 x 3 = $3)

So number of notebooks
= 3 x 6
= 18
