We can see 13/20 as 13 units out of 20 and 3/4 as 3 units out of 4.

Since the number of boys and girls left are equal, they should have the same number of units. So we should make their numerators the same.

13 x 3 = 39

So 13/20 = 39/60
3/4 = 39/52

This tells you that there are 60 units of boys and 52 units of girls at first. And there are 39 units of boys and 39 units of girls remaining in the hall.

Difference = 60 units - 52 units
= 8 units

8 units = 120 pupils
1 unit = 120 pupils ÷ 8 = 15 pupils

Number of pupils that remained in the hall
= 39 units + 39 units
= 78 units

= 78 x 15 pupils
= 1170 pupils
