We perform the differentiation using our knowledge of basic differentiation, chain rule, product rule and (soon to be learnt) quotient rule.

Remember that dy/dx represents the gradient of a curve (at least, the tangent to the curve) at any point on the curve. This gradient is exactly the same gradient as the "y = mx + c" gradient in coordinate geometry, so do not be surprised if you see differentiation questions when the coordinate geometry diagrams are given in the question.
